A MAN charged with dangerous driving on the motorway while speeding without insurance only had his present sentence extended by a fortnight and will have to wait until March 2031 before he can legally hope to drive again.

Andrian Rotari from Cabane, Ballymanny, Newbridge appeared in Naas District Court on the day of his 21st birthday from custody, and was joined in court by his father.

“They look like brothers,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan, before being told that Mr Rotari was presently serving a sentence for an unnamed offence, with a release date on 25 October.

Sergeant Dave Hanrahan told the court that the defendant was clocked at 160kph on the M7 at Walshestown at around 6.45pm on 27 April 2023.

“He was observed driving from the outside lane to the inside lane in a dangerous manner, and when stopped, admitted to having no insurance,” said the sergeant.

Although he had no previous convictions, the sergeant revealed he had seven subsequent convictions, three of which were for no insurance and one for speeding.

“There is a history here in relation to road traffic offences,” said defending barrister Mark Gibbons. “He has found being in custody a sobering matter,” he said, before pleading for no extension on the sentence.

The judge sentenced Mr Rotari to five months in prison on the no insurance, and a consecutive three months for dangerous driving, and imposed a six-year ban, with all three sanctions to run from 6 March.
