A MAN who allegedly smashed his aunt’s windscreen with a slash hook the night before court, and so appeared from custody, was eventually given bail under a number of conditions.

Edward Carthy (22), Clonmullion, Athy appeared in the district court last week (14 January) charged with criminal damage to the Corolla at Ardrew Halting Site the evening before.

“He damaged his aunt’s car with a slash hook. There have been numerous public order incidents that the guards have been called to, a number of incidents on the halting site over the last couple of days,” said Garda Gráinne Phelan.

However, when asked by Judge Desmond Zaidan if there were any objections to his being bailed, Garda Phelan said: “No, but we are looking for conditions”.

In mitigation, defending solicitor Jacqui McManus told the court that her client was 22 “and has never been in trouble before”.

Garda Phelan asked that he be in no contact with his named aunt (his father’s sister), sign on twice a week and provide Athy Garda Station with a phone number. Judge Zaidan remanded Mr Carthy on continuing bail until 27 May, but warned “if you end up before me again, you will end up in jail”.
