A MAN who “began to eat a mattress” in a Kildare garda cell appeared before a sitting of Naas District Court last week.

Appearing in Naas District Court this week were a couple, Agnieszka (38) and Grzegorz (37) Kulpa of Allenview Heights, Newbridge, who were both charged with being drunk and abusive, initially on Edward Street in the town on 12 May 2024.

“They called me Polish refugee and a blonde bitch,” said Ms Kupla, about her treatment in Newbridge Garda Station following the arrest. These charges were then duplicated.

“Was it all worth it?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan.

Double Take

They both nodded.

“That’s pure love,” smiled the judge.

Sergeant Mary Meade then explained what else went on following their arrest.

“The man,” started Sergeant Meade, only to be interrupted by Mrs Kulpa: “husband!” “The male in the cells started to rip up the mattress and then began to eat the mattress,” she said, while the entire court shook its head and did a double take.

“Wait now,” said the normally unflappable judge, who has seen or heard most things, “I think I need a glass of water!”

Then, returning to the case, the judge fined each of the couple €500.

He concluded: “I’m feeling pain for the mattress!”
