A Kildare man, one of four men who burgled a house in Emo, was sentenced to three months in prison when he came before a recent sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said the incident happened at 7.10am on 14 April when a car carrying four men pulled up outside the house in Emo. Three of the men exited the car and jumped over the front wall, forced the front door and stole property from it.

He said the incident was captured on CCTV and that the man in court was the only one who had not been wearing a facemask at the time and, when arrested and interviewed, made no admissions.

He said the accused, Edward Connors, Moateview, Kilmeade, Athy, had one previous conviction for assaulting a garda and was due to be sentenced on that matter later this month.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the burglary charge in Emo.

Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his client was 18 at the time of the offence and that “the house had been unoccupied.

He was the only one identified through CCTV. He was hugely addicted to cocaine and tablets at the time, but he is now intoxicant free.

The issue was that he was moving in circles with more senior men and was simply desperate to get money to feed his habit. He is the only one being punished for this crime”.

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced Mr Connors to three months in prison and commented: “Discovering your home has been burgled is a very serious and distressing event.”
