A MAN with just four days to go on his present sentence was jailed for a further 12 months for abusing gardaí in Newbridge, and possession of heroin in Athy.

“I’m imposing a custodial sentence, because the dogs in the street know the damage that illicit drugs do,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan in Athy District Court this week (10 March).

He was a speaking to Edward Connors (20), with an address at Moat View, Kilmead who was attending court from custody where his release date was given to be in just four days, on 14 March.

The court heard how a garda patrol was in Dara Park, Newbridge on 9 December when “the defendant shouted abuse at the guards, and threw a heavy ash tray at them”.

“After his arrest he gave the wrong details,” said Sergeant Mary Meade.

“That’s just pure thuggish,” said the judge, before the sergeant continued.

Acting Suspiciously

“Previously, on 15 May 2024 gardaí on Woodstock Street in Athy noticed Mr Connors acting suspiciously, and when stopped and searched he was found with heroin,” she said.

The sergeant did not specify the value, however, it was enough for Mr Connors to earn a possession with intent to supply charge.

She also noted he had two bench warrants in existence for failing to appear in court when summonsed.

After revealing his client’s projected release date, defending barrister Hugo Mills told the court: “This is a particularly tragic story, he is already the parent of a deceased child, with one other alive”.

“Ex-girlfriend?” asked the judge.

“No, no. Still with her. She stands by her man,” said Mr Mills.

“After that death he went off the rails … this is a young man who has made some terrible mistakes, which can be forgiven, and put down to the trauma of his experience,” he added.

“The loss of a child, I’m sorry to hear that, but I am imposing a custodial sentence,” said the judge.

The judge sentenced Mr Connors to nine months on the drugs charge, and a consecutive three for the threatening and abusive behaviour.
