Kildare residents in 'very poor' accommodation could be moved

RESIDENTS of a Naas housing estate might be set for moves to new accommodation, after local councillors described significant problems with residents’ current living situations.
At the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District, cllr Ger Dunne asked the council to outline its ‘current position on both the houses and residents of St. Ita’s Place Estate in Naas and clarify the role and responsibility of the housing body’.
Administrative officer Eileen McGrath issued the council’s response, stating that ‘the housing body will be contacting tenants about their housing options and possible transfer to alternative accommodation’.
Ms McGrath’s response added that ‘the housing body is responsible for the maintenance of the properties until all tenants are transferred’.
Speaking at the meeting, Naas Mayor Bill Clear said that he knows an elderly resident of the estate who must wear a coat while at home due to the low temperature, describing the house as “freezing”.
He expressed concern about the potential health problems that could arise for residents such as the elderly woman.
A municipal district meeting last year heard that the formal transfer of the units at St Ita’s to a housing body was at an advanced stage.
Councillor Dunne raised concerns earlier this year that some residents were living in “very poor conditions”.
