Kildare review on local road speed limits

Phase 1 will see a reduction in the rural local road speed limit to 60km/h

A public consultation process is set to begin in Kildare for a review of speed limits on rural local roads.

It follows recent legislation – the Road Traffic Act 2024 – which provides for the phased lowering of default speed limits in Ireland. Phase 1 will see a reduction in the rural local road speed limit to 60km/h, with a commencement date at the end of November 2024.

“This public consultation process is being undertaken to help the public make themselves aware of the proposed changes in default speed limits which are to be implemented on a phased country wide basis over the next year,” Kildare Co Council said. “It is important for all road users to understand the proposed speed limit changes for Kildare and to utilise this opportunity to make submissions and have their say.”

Submissions or observations can be made online at consult.kildarecoco.ie or in writing to the A/Senior Executive Officer, Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces Department, Kildare County Council, Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, Co Kildare, on or before 5pm on Friday 20 September.

People are asked to make their submission by one medium only i.e. in hard copy or online.
