Kildare road closed following serious accident at railway bridge

A portion of the road from Levitstown to Kilkea has been closed off until further notice following a serious accident at the railway bridge at Rosetown. The accident, involving a single vehicle, took place in the early hours of Thursday morning. The railway bridge, which straddles the busy Waterford to Dublin railway line, was badly damaged in the incident. Staff from Íarnrod Éireann worked through last night and into this morning to retrieve the heavy boulders, which spilled onto the side of the railtrack. It is expected work on reconstructing the bridge and the badly damaged wall on the opposite side of the road, will commence within the next few days.

Gardaí arrested the man at the scene and brought him to Athy Garda Station for questioning. They subsequently brought him to Naas General Hospital for a minor foot injury, and it is understood he was breathalysed during this period, although results of this have not yet been made public.
