Kildare statue damage could cost €10,000

The John Devoy statue in Naas
AN official had to explain to a councillor that Kildare County Council was not responsible for the damage done to the John Devoy statue, and it was in fact done by a misguided member of the public.
Cllr Anne Breen made the query at the recent meeting of the Naas Municipal District where she wondered: “why, and what method was used to attempt to clean the John Devoy Statue in Poplar Square?”
“This appears to have caused serious damage to the surface of the statue,” she added.
“The county council has not cleaned the John Devoy statue, and the damage has been caused by a member of the public,” said Elaine Donnelly, Acting Arts Officer.
“The gardaí have been informed, and the sculptor Jarlath Daly has been contacted regarding a quote to address the damage,” she added in her formal report to Cllr Breen.
Subsequent to this meeting her colleague cllr Bill Clear got an update on this cost and was “the repair is going to cost upward of €10,000”.
“It’s got to be removed, re-dipped, and replaced,” he said.
“There’s no talking with this person, she cleaned it with some sort of cleaner that’s inappropriate for such a bronze statue,” he explained.
