A KILDARE woman who had her car seized for having no insurance was not in a financial position to retrieve it, so instead abandoned it to the state.

So solicitor Philip Meagher told Judge Andrew Cody at Portlaoise District Court when his client appeared before it for driving without insurance.

The defendant, Genna Leigh Bennett (31), Beech Drive, The Friary, Castledermot pleaded guilty to the offence that took place at Debbicot, Mountmellick on 8 July last year.

The court was told that when gardaí stopped Ms Bennett driving, she told them that she had no insurance cover on the car.

Ms Bennett has no previous convictions Mr Meagher said that his client’s car was seized by the gardaí, “but she wasn’t in a financial situation to retrieve it and abandoned it to the state.” Mr Meagher said: “She admits she took a chance to drive on the day, but hasn’t driven since. She works as a valuator and is not in a position to buy another car.” Judge Cody fined Ms Bennett €500.
