Kildare's homeless figures revealed

OVER 140 adults in Kildare accessed emergency accommodation in a one-week period according to a homelessness report by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The department last week published their homelessness report for November 2024, with worrying figures, both locally and nationally.
In Kildare, the report shows that during the week of 18-24 November, 146 adults accessed emergency accommodation. In that same week, it was found that there were 520 homeless people in the Mid-East region overall, equating to 120 families, 195 children and 325 single adults across counties Kildare, Meath, and Wicklow. That same week, 10,541 adults were counted across Ireland.
However, these figures do not reflect the true number of those homeless, as they only account for those in emergency accommodation and leave out those those sleeping rough, in domestic violence shelters, refugees, or asylum seekers on our streets. These figures also exclude those in hidden homelessness: people sleeping in cars, staying with friends, on sofas, or in unsuitable conditions.
Kildare County Council is facilitating monthly drop-in clinics throughout the county to provide information about homelessness supports that are available. If you are looking for advice, clinics are taking place this month at six locations in the county: On January 7, 2pm-4pm at Maynooth Library; January 8, 2pm-4pm at Athy Family Resource Centre; January 13, 2pm-4pm, Teach Dara, Kildare town; January 14, 2pm-4pm, Celbridge Library; January 20, 10am-12pm, Curragh Family Resource Centre; and, January 24, 2.30-4pm, Newbridge Family Resource Centre.
