A MAN accused of “intentionally strangling” a woman in a Kildare town guesthouse is to face trial in the circuit court.

At a recent sitting of Naas District Court, David Marnell (32), of Dysart, Cuff’s Grange, Kilkenny appeared from custody, following his arrest that morning.

He was charged under section 3(a) of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act – recklessly strangling – of a named woman at Silken Thomas in Kildare town on 24 January, 2025.

“Intentionally strangled? Those are unusual particulars,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan.

His arresting officer explained how he had been arrested, and that he had made no formal reply of the charge.

“The DPP has indicated prosecution on indictment (circuit court),” said the garda.

“They were partners, in Kildare town for the night, in the Silken Thomas,” said the officer.

“Partners in life or in business?” asked the judge.

“”Love,” answered the garda.

“Will you have a book in July?” asked the judge, and when the investigating officer nodded, the judge remanded Marnell back into custody to await his High Court Bail application, and a book of evidence on 2 July.
