A MAN who burned down a family home in Castledermot last year and then stole a car after crashing the getaway vehicle plead guilty to both at a recent sitting of Naas Circuit Court.

Robbie Brennan (36) with an address at Evington House, New Garden, Athy Road, Carlow appeared in court on Tuesday 23 June where he plead guilty to one count of unlawful taking of a vehicle and one count of arson.

It was said in court that on Thursday 12 June 2025, Mr Brennan damaged a property at Abbeyview, Castledermot by fire and took a blue Nissan X-Trail car at Gorteenvacken, Castledermot without the owner’s permission on the same date.

It was heard previously at a sitting of Naas District Court that a teddy bear soaked in petrol was used to start the fire at the house. Gardaí said damages were estimated at €200,000.

The accused will return to Naas Circuit Court via videolink on 30 June, before his sentencing, which is scheduled for 15 July.
