Naas buildings eyed for refurbishment

Glen na Greine
PLANNING permission is being sought for an old, derelict property near Glen na Gréine on the Dublin road in Naas – opposite shops Boots and Dealz. This planning application comes in tandem with several other residential projects – private and public – in the same area.
The proposal includes extensive alterations and refurbishments to the existing single-storey cottage facing the Dublin Road. This will involve the demolition of existing rear extensions and the construction of a new single-storey rear extension, transforming the property into a two-bedroom unit.
In addition to the refurbishment, the development seeks permission to construct six new residential units within the site. These will be arranged across three two-storey blocks and will comprise a mix of two two-bedroom units and four one-bedroom units – perfect for those with mobility issues wishing to live closer to amenities within the town.
Access to the site is set to be improved with new pedestrian and bicycle access from the Dublin Road frontage, as well as pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular access from the Gleann na Gréine side.
The plans also include a range of ancillary works such as site service infrastructure, photovoltaic panels, water attenuation measures, connection to the mains sewer, altered ground levels—including the creation of a pond—along with a gazebo, landscaping, car and bicycle parking facilities, and screening walls of varying heights. Several existing garden structures on the site are also set to be demolished and removed.
This application is currently under review by Kildare County Council at this time, but if granted would be a great asset to the town.
According to Naas cllr Bill Clear, a number of developments are planned for derelict properties on the Dublin road, which will see a great number of residential properties opening up in a very prime location in the heart of Naas Town.
Other properties include the Alm House, which is directly beside the property seeking planning permission. This property has been purchased by Kildare County Council for renovation. Once renovated, this property will be available to those on the social housing list.
“I think it’s really good to see this – I fully support this,” said cllr Clear.
Also on the same road – the former El Fico building has already been renovated with four apartments, which will be on the rental market soon.
“I’m delighted to see these three buildings in a row all with action on them, because they were bringing the area down.” “You can see all along this road there’s big changes. I’m very happy to see this area getting renovated,” said cllr Clear.
