PUNCHESTOWN-BORN Seanad Senator Aubrey McCarthy said it was a “privilege” to meet the new Pope Leo IXV during a recent audience in Rome.

Senator McCarthy took the opportunity to extend an invitation to Pope Leo to visit Kildare in the near future. He spoke of the county’s deep-rooted connection to St Brigid, its vibrant communities, and its longstanding tradition of hospitality.

As a personal gesture, Senator McCarthy presented Pope Leo with a handcrafted Newbridge Silverware St Brigid’s Cross. The gift, created by the renowned Newbridge-based company, symbolises peace, protection, and the enduring legacy of St Brigid.

Speaking after the meeting, Senator McCarthy said that he was honoured to share the story of St Bridget with the Pope Leo. He expressed hope that the invitation to visit Kildare will be take up soon.
