PARENTAL fears in Naas about the scarcity of places in primary schools in town for this September have been settled down after it was announced that an additional Junior Infants Class has been secured for St Corban’s National School in the town.

Frontbench Spokesperson on Defence and Equestrian, Cllr Bill Clear, has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Education that an additional Junior Infants class will be provided at St Corban’s NS for the coming school year.

The decision follows sustained representations made by Cllr Clear regarding the urgent crisis in school places in Naas.

“This is very positive news for local families, as up to 30 families in the town were facing the real prospect of being left without a school place this September,” said cllr Clear.

“The extra class at St Corban’s will now provide places for most of those children and will relieve enormous stress and uncertainty for parents.” Cllr Clear said the situation highlighted a deeper and ongoing infrastructure problem in the rapidly expanding town.

“Naas is one of the fastest growing towns in the country, yet services are continually playing catch-up, particularly in education,” he pointed out.

“Families cannot be expected to move into communities where there is no guarantee their child will have a school place.” He added that surrounding areas are also under severe pressure. Sallins, Kill and Johnstown are all experiencing major population growth also."
