KILDARE County Council has confirmed that works on the Newbridge public plaza is to be completed after the delivery of the Newbridge Library, Local Studies, and Archive Building.

The update came in response to a motion tabled cllr Chris Pender at the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting.

The motion called on the council to prioritise the plaza development, provide an update on design progress, confirm delivery timelines, and outline how the local community would be consulted to shape the final outcome.

According to the Strategic Projects and Public Realm team, the project will proceed in two distinct phases.

Phase one will focus on the construction of the upgraded library and archive facilities, while phase two will deliver the larger plaza and associated transport improvements along Main Street.

Design reviews are ongoing, with a focus on improving the building’s energy performance to reduce long-term costs and support climate action goals. Suitability Assessment Questionnaires have been issued on the eTenders platform to shortlist potential contractors.

Construction on the library building is expected to begin in 2026, though a more precise timeline will be confirmed following finalisation of the detailed design.

In terms of community engagement, the council has included public feedback in its Chief Executive Report, which was reviewed by elected members ahead of the Part 8 planning process. Responses from local stakeholders, residents, and businesses are outlined in the report’s appendix, and commitments made during this stage will be reflected in the final detailed design.

In response to the report, cllr Pender said: “To be honest, I am disappointed. I understand why it has to be separated out – I just want to see this plaza delivered.”

Cllr Pender noted that the construction of the plaza would work to give a fresh appearance to Newbridge and “change people’s perspectives as they come into the town.”
