No clean getaway for Kildare thief

A MAN who stole four boxes of washing machine tabs worth €30 was fined more than ten times that in court last week, proving a clean getaway is very difficult.
Roland Hlacs (42) with an address on Garter Lane, Athy was appearing in Athy District Court recently charged with one count of theft of the four boxes of detergent from Perry’s Supermarket on Leinster Street, Athy on 6 December.
“He is very anxious to pay this back,” said defending solicitor Brian Larkin.
“He has some issues with alcohol, but not on this occasion,” he added.
“I must say, judge, I’ve always found him courteous and polite,” said Mr Larkin.
However, Judge Desmond Zaidan did not appear moved Mr Larkin’s optimism, found Mr Hlacs guilty, and fined him a total of €400 for the theft.
