DELAYS in progressing the project to upgrade Market Square in Kildare Town look set to continue.

The Part VIII proposal for a scheme to upgrade the square in the centre of the town was approved by councillors for the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) in May 2024. The project was borne out of the Kildare Town renewal plan.

The project was estimated to cost €4 million at that stage last year.

However, suitable funding has yet to be identified to progress the project through to the next stages of tender and construction.

This was outlined in a report issued by Triona Casey, acting senior executive engineer at Kildare County Council, after cllr Noel Connolly requested an update on progress being made on the project at the most recent meeting of Kildare Newbridge MD.

According to the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, upon completion of the project “the overhaul of the public space will lead to a pedestrianisation of the majority of the square to create a focus for the community”.

Metropolitan Workshop Architecture and urbanism – a team of architects based across London and Dublin – were commissioned to undertake project of upgrading Market Square as well as the wider plan for the renewal of Kildare Town.
