Not enough time to get across Kildare pedestrian crossing, says local rep
The pedestrian crossing near Naas Library
THE ELDERLY and people with disabilities are not being given enough time to cross a road in a busy part of Naas, according to a local councillor.
Cllr Bill Clear brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District proposing “that the council reviews and amend the pedestrian crossing timings at the crossings adjacent to the library and the Bank of Ireland in Naas by removing the simultaneous flashing amber person and yellow traffic light and providing additional crossing time".
The councillor further detailed that not enough time is given currently for the safe crossing of pedestrians such as the elderly and people with disabilities.
Acting senior engineer in sustainable transport and traffic management at the council Chris Galvin issued a report, which said the timings at the crossings have already been reviewed and are “considered sufficient and are compliant with industry standards and regulations”.
Cllr Clear expressed his view that the insufficient pedestrian crossing timings are a relic of a time when pedestrians were not at the top of the road user hierarchy.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Galvin indicated that the council will look into the matter further.
