Parents 'abandoning' cars outside homes at Naas school
Approach road to Lacken View
A MOVE to assign a community warden to encourage adherence to an active travel scheme at a Naas school has been shut down.
The parking situation at the Holy Child National School at Ballycane was raised by cllr Ger Dunne asking “can the council confirm if it plans to assign a community warden to the active travel scheme associated with the school in Lacken View, Naas to monitor and assist with the parking situation at the school drop off and collection times.”
Speaking at the meeting, cllr Dunne said that he is getting questions from residents on the matter, who find the current situation to be “dangerous”, according to the councillor.
He said that parents are “driving up to the school, they’re dropping off their children, parking their cars, abandoning it, they’re walking into the school and coming back out”.
Cllr Dunne suggested that a warden assigned “even on a temporary basis” would make a difference in “getting the idea back out” in advising people to use the park and stride car park at the nearby church.
Park and stride initiatives encourage people to park a distance from the school and walk the last few minutes. They are aimed at reducing congestion around schools, increasing physical activity and improving safety.
The council’s response said that they have no plans to assign a community warden. It noted that there is a school warden assigned to a crossing at the front of the school.
The response further detailed that the council circulated a leaflet to all parents following the delivery of the active travel scheme “advising them of the revised parking arrangements and advising them of the use of the park and stride location at the nearby church".

Cllr Dunne also brought forward a second question regarding Lacken View, asking if the council could confirm if it plans to add the estate to the road resurfacing list “due to the poor surface conditions”.
The council’s response said that the estate has not been included in the 2026 restoration and improvement programme, but added that the council will “continue to carry out necessary maintenance to ensure the road surface remains safe and serviceable.”
