Patrician Secondary School bow out of Bro Bosco Cup
Hugh Martin scored 2-2 but it wasn't enough for Patrician against St Peters, Dunboyne
DESPITE an at times gallant effort, Patrician Secondary School, N wbridge, bowed out of the 2025/26 Bro Bosco Cup when they suffered a twelve point defeat to St Peter’s Dunboyne at a breezy but dry Pitch 3 in Manguard Park on Tuesday afternoon.
After losing to defending champions, Colaiste Mhuire, Mullingar, in the opening round, the Newbridge school needed a win to advance to the knockout stages. A positive opening saw them open the scoring with a point from corner forward, Aaron Redmond after just 20 seconds and despite two points from impressive Peter’s centre half forward, Sean Delaney, one from a free, the Tommy Moolick/Alan Dignam managed Patricians drew level again on five minutes through a free from full forward, Luke Mahon. The game really turned the Meath school’s way for the next 15 minutes when they outscored the “home” side 1-7 to 0-1. This scoring spree included a goal from dangerous full forward, James Lonergan, who bundled home after his initial shot was brilliantly saved by Robbie Byrne in the Newbridge school’s goal, and a two pointer from wing back Andrew Norman. Patricians got a lifeline on 23 minutes when exciting centre half forward, Hugh Martin, was bundled over for the penalty which the Suncroft clubman converted himself. Patricians finished off the half with another Mahon free and a fisted point by Martin to leave them adrift by just four points at the break, 1-5 to 1-9.
It was point for point early in the second half with Martin and Mahon on the mark from play again for Patricians and they got a further lifeline on 42 minutes when the pair combined for Martin to finish to the net to leave just three points between them at 2-7 to 1-13 with the final quarter to come.
That final quarter belonged to the Dunboyne school with a scoring spree that included a two-pointer free from James McCaghy and a goal from midfielder Eoin McCrudden. Patricians fought back again and were rewarded with a goal when substitute, Ross O’Hagan, outjumped the Meath school’s defence to fist home a Hugh Martin centre. That was as good as it got for the Newbridge school as Peter’s were able to see out the game and had the luxury of Lonergan tapping over a penalty in the 52nd minute.
