Plan for traffic changes to Athy street progressing
Offaly Street
A PLAN to increase traffic flow through Offaly Street in Athy is progressing after months of delay.
A recent meeting was told that drawings are being prepared for the project, with a consultation and implementation set to follow.
At October’s meeting of Athy Municipal District, cllr Brian Dooley asked the council to confirm a date for a pilot scheme that would change traffic flow, allowing traffic from Offaly Street to travel north through Emily Square towards Stanhope Street.
Acting senior engineer Daragh Conlan issued the local authority’s written response, stating that drawings are currently being prepared as part of a Section 38 process for the works.
The engineer added that he hopes to bring the matter before the councillors at next month’s municipal district meeting, with the pilot to be implemented after a consultation process.
Cllr Dooley called on the council to change the one-way system in October of last year as a means of easing congestion.
In March of this year, it emerged that a meeting promised by the council over the matter months earlier had yet to take place.
Cllr Dooley told this month’s meeting “it will make a huge difference to the town”.
