Public consultation for two new bridges on Kildare greenway

The bridge in Sallins which is similar to what is being proposed

Kildare County Council has announced a round of public consultation for two new bridges on the Grand Canal Greenway between Sallins and Lowtown.

The proposal is for the provision of two additional bridges for Phase 2 of the Grand Canal Greenway, one is located in Lowtown, and the second just east of the existing Healy’s Bridge, also known as Bonynge Bridge.

A curved steel bridge similar to the bridge installed in Sallins last year is proposed.

The proposed works would also include an extension to the Greenway, roughly 1km, along the southern bank from the pedestrian bridge at Lowtown toward the village of Robertstown.

The works near Healy's Bridge would also include an additional pathway from the new pedestrian bridge to the originally Greenway route, around 100 metres.

The new pedestrian bridge at Lowtown also enables users to access the Barrow Blueway route which heads south all the way to St Mullins in Carlow.

Full details of the plan is available here . Submissions must be made no later than 5pm on Thursday 3 July 2025. All submissions and observations should be headed ‘Part 8 Proposed Grand Canal Greenway Phase 2 Additional Bridges Ref. No. P82025.03.’
