Push for parking space removal on busy Kildare road

Push for parking space removal on busy Kildare road

Calls to scrap parking on Cutlery Road, Newbridge have been made

MEMBERS of Kildare Newbridge Municipal District, once again, discussed the removal of parking spaces in Newbridge town, located on a very narrow road running alongside Whitewater Shopping Centre.

Cllr Rob Power, who brought the motion to the council, asked for an update on the removal of parking spaces on Cutlery Road in Newbridge — an action previously approved by the local municipal district.

In response, Senior Executive Officer with the Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces Department, stated that removing the parking spaces will require a statutory process under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994, along with a review of existing parking bye-laws.

He added that the proposal to remove spaces in order to create more room for traffic must be assessed using the road user hierarchy outlined by the Department of Transport, ensuring any changes align with national transport policy.

Cllr Power said he was “a little confused” in terms of the design hold up on the project, and a department representative asserted that the project is not currently with a person or body – and that’s why the project remains at a standstill.

While the removal had been locally approved, the response highlights that further steps are required before any physical changes can be made on the ground.
