DISCONTENT with Uisce Éireann has been articulated over issues at a sewage treatment plant in a Kildare village.
At the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District, cllr Veralouise Behan brought forward a motion requesting “that the council addresses wastewater issues in Kilmead sewage treatment plant.” The motion was seconded by Cathaoirleach Ivan Keatley, and was also supported by Cllr Aoife Breslin.
A report issued by the executive at Kildare County Council (KCC) in response to Cllr Behan’s motion stated that the matter has been referred to the dedicated Uisce Éireann email address.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Behan noted the terrible smell coming from the treatment plant, and said that it is “not ok for people to have to live with this situation on their doorstep”.
Cllr Breslin noted that there a number of wastewater facilities that are not up to scratch and said that conversations with Uisce Éireann are “very stilted”.
Cathaoirleach Keatley said that he has made a long number of queries to Uisce Éireann on the matter and commented that “that the amount of drip we (he and his fellow councillors) were fed was nothing short of scandalous”, in a scathing criticism of the water utility company.
Cllr Keatley went on to say to a council official present at the meeting that he and his fellow members want to meet Uisce Éireann, and that more correspondence with them requesting a meeting was needed.
