Restrictions to Kildare bridge this summer
High Bridge, Monasterevin
ACCESS to the High Bridge, Monasterevin for vehicles will be restricted during the summer months.
This emerged at the most recent meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District where cllr Noel Connolly asked the council to provide a timeline “for when it will close vehicular access to the High Bridge, Monasterevin?”.
Engineer Carthac de Brí issued the council’s response, saying that his office “will arrange to have vehicular traffic restricted over High Bridge during the summer months”.
Cllr Connolly accepted the report.
The bridge is over 200 years old, having been built around 1800.
A number of locals supported the removal of vehicular access when the council proposed it back in 2023. Safety concerns for road users were cited.
One submission stated that signs alerting drivers to the unsuitability of the bridge for Heavy Goods Vehicles had been ineffective.
