Sonoco, Athy Celebrating 50 years in business

SONOCO Metal Packaging, formerly known as CROWN and Borden, marked a major milestone this year as the Athy-based factory celebrated 50 years in operation.

Established by Borden in 1975, the facility was originally set up to manufacture metal cans for the baby formula industry. Over the past five decades, it has undergone several ownership changes, including periods under CROWN and KPS Partners, before becoming part of Sonoco Company Inc.

Throughout its history, the factory has remained a significant and stable employer in Athy, playing a key role in the town’s industrial and economic life.

To celebrate its half-century in business, Sonoco hosted a special anniversary event at the Clanard Court Hotel on Friday, 28 November.

The gathering brought together employees past and present, along with their partners, to mark the occasion and reflect on the company’s longstanding contribution to the local community.

Members of management, the Athy supply chain team, as well as all other valued members of staff celebrated in style along with retirees, who came to reconnect back with their former colleagues.
