The driver said he was late for the Galway Races INPHO/Morgan Treacy

A speeding driver told Kildare gardaí that he was “late for the Galway races”.

In an episode that you could file under ‘you couldn’t make this up’, Naas Roads Policing Unit detected a driver speeding 101kph in a 60kph zone in Milltown while dangerously overtaking on a continuous white line.

‘When stopped, the driver claimed he was “late for the Galway Races”, stated he had “never been in trouble before”, and asked if he could be “let off.”’ said gardaí on the an Garda Síochana Kildare Facebook page.

‘No Stewards’ inquiry required on this occasion.’ said the garda poster who clearly had prepared well for this particular report.

The driver now faces an eye watering €240 fine and three penalty points.

'Leave the racing to the horses. Stay safe,' concluded gardaí.
