IT HAS been revealed that 229 new homes have been approved for construction in the town of Athy since January 2023.
At the most recent Athy MD meeting, cllr Brian Dooley sought clarity from Kildare County Council on the number of new residential builds approved and under construction in the town of Athy since January 2023.
According to a report presented by Senior Planner Amy Granville, a total of 229 housing units have been granted planning permission within the Athy Local Area Plan (LAP) settlement boundary over the period from January 2023 to date.
The breakdown shows that 37 units were approved in 2023, 189 in 2024 and 3 units in 2025 to date.
Cllr Dooley also queried how many of these approved homes — both private and those through Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) — are currently under construction.
In a follow-up report, it was confirmed that 182 units are currently under construction, all stemming from the permissions granted in 2024.
No construction has commenced on the homes approved in 2023 or 2025 to date, although one commencement notice has been received for a single unit from the 2023 batch.
This data highlights a significant surge in residential development for Athy in 2024.
Cllr Dooley was happy with the “positive” response from the council, and said that all of the new builds “look excellent.”
