Town gates for Kilcullen and Athgarvan

TRAFFIC calming measures for approach roads into Kilcullen and Athgarvan have were raised at a meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District.
Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer proposed introducing town gates to control traffic and affect driver behaviour by reducing speeds at key entry points to both locations.
In a report, the council confirmed that a county-wide review of urban speed limits is scheduled to take place in 2026, and that once this review is completed, it would be more appropriate to plan the locations of infrastructure like town gates.
Cllr O’Dwyer responded: “Driver behaviour is because of design, not signs on the road,” and explained that long approach roads with no infrastructure to slow traffic down is causing an “added incentive of speed.”
However, she welcomed the upcoming review, and asked for a timeline for the speed reviews of both towns.
