Train services have resumed following a "serious incident" on the rail line between Thurles and Limerick Junction.

Irish Rail suspended trains following a "tragic incident on the line".

Transfers via bus were being arranged.

The route forms part of the busy Heuston to Cork mainline, with services between the capital, Kerry and Limerick likely to also be affected.

A spokesperson from Irish Rail said: "Emergency services are attending the scene, and the line is expected to remain closed for a number of hours. We are working to arrange bus transfers for affected train services, with all services between Dublin and Cork / Kerry / Limerick affected.

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience and understanding in these very sad circumstances."
