ONE of the biggest employers in Athy is planning a major revamp of its industrial plumbing system.

TSL Projects Ltd, the parent company of American Fruits and Flavors who are best known for their Monster Energy drinks, and employ 100 people in the Townsparks Industrial Estate has just been given permission by Kildare County Council to install a trade effluent waste water treatment.

This will see the construction of a sludge removal building 8.73m high (28ft6”), and an underground attenuation (collection) water tank to assist the pond to the south of the premises that was granted four years ago.

The extension will include a control building, a dissolved air flotation building, an aeration tank and two clarifiers.

The firm has sent clarification correspondence to the Environmental Health Department, Inland Fisheries, and Uisce Eireann detailing their plans, to the apparent satisfaction of all.

The reason behind this development was the slowness of the outflow into the existing surface water flow which was limited by a hydro-brake.

The underground attenuation tank was chosen as the most viable option after all Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) “were explored and found unsuitable”.

Following a comprehensive review of all the SuDS options the underground tank was identified as the most practical and environmentally friendly option for the site.

The new underground tank will hold the same capacity – 350m³ - as the existing holding pond.

“This approach delivers stormwater management while addressing operational and environmental risks, making it the most suitable solution,” said a spokesperson for SDS Design Engineers.

“The feature will support SuDS principles by promoting natural infiltration and reducing surface water runoff,” said the planners.

While it is not known how much this installation will cost, the planning fees alone will cost TSL €20,466.
