A woman in her 70s who is half blind and partially deaf won an interim barring order against her husband, who she married just four years ago.
“You get to see human nature in its best form and its worst form in the district court – the good, the bad and the indifferent,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan, shaking his head with a wry smile.
The woman was assisted into the witness box in Athy District Court by her daughter.
The daughter explained to the court that her mother had married a man who she described as “paranoid schizophrenic”.
“He breaks everything in the house, he has manic episodes and is violent,” the daughter said. “As it is, she has a panic alarm in the house,” added the daughter.
“In the district court you get to see and hear every circumstance,” said the judge.
“The guards were called to her house five times in one day,” the daughter revealed.
“I’ll grant you a barring order,” said the judge, and declared that the interim order was just for a week and that all parties would have to appear in Naas District Court for a full hearing, as is the usual procedure.
“I’ll go out of my way to put her case first, but it sounds quite likely that (named man) won’t turn up,” added the judge..
“Will you reassure her that, as things stand, he can’t come near her, and I have no reason not to believe her,” said Judge Zaidan.
“She has a safe-guarding social worker,” the daughter added.
