Kildare County Council has announced that works on the Craddockstown Road Active Travel Scheme will commence from 24 February.
Clonmel Enterprises Ltd has been awarded the contract following an open tender competition.
This project includes a comprehensive redesign of the Craddockstown Road from the Ballycane Road Junction to the local schools on the Craddockstown Road.
The idea is to enhance pedestrian and cyclist facilities and improve safety for non-vehicular road users.
The project will include the partial realignment of the road to make space for new cycle facilities and will consist of a 2.5 metre wide, bi-directional cycleway on the east side of the road, with an adjacent upgraded footpath of minimum width of two metres.
A three-metre wide shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on the east side of Craddockstown Road, along the central section of the proposed scheme is also to be included.
There will be an upgraded footpath on the west side, as well as an upgrade of the existing pedestrian crossing on to a signalised toucan crossing.
There will be a raised entry treatment for continuous level crossings by pedestrians and cyclists at the intersections with Oak Glade Close road and the junction with Ban Na Greinne Road.
There will also be Safe Routes to School road markings and bollards at the local schools to help improve safety.
