A MAN subject to a protection order notice last November for harassing his ex was was placed under a peace bond for 12 months after a judge accepted “he is observing the ban”.

Defending solicitor Seamus Boyle told Judge Desmond Zaidan at a closed family law hearing in Athy District Court last week (13 October) that his client was subject to a protection order on 25 November 2025.

The attending ex-partner then told the court that “I haven’t heard from him in months”, and when pressed, said it was last on 16 February.

The judge then turned to Inspector Seamus Houlihan for the details behind the protection order.

“Last November the injured party wanted to go on holiday, and the defendant sent her a text suggesting that because of her forgetfulness, it would be a pity if she left something on and the house burnt down,” he said.

“Then on 16 February, on the street in Athy, he said to her ‘I fu*king hate you, you fu*king bastard’,” he added.

However, after Mr Boyle’s assertion, the judge ruled: “I’m going to put you on a peace bond for 12 months”.

“The reason I’m not sending you to jail is that you pleaded guilty, and things have calmed down, according to this lady,” said the judge.

“I still have stuff left in (named woman’s) place,” protested the man.

The judge checked that the investigating officer was present and, once assured of this, he said: “Agree a time, but you must be accompanied by the arresting garda. You do not go on your own.”

Mr Boyle agreed immediately on behalf of his client.
