Gardaí in Co Donegal arrested a drug-driver and a passenger after they drove through a Garda checkpoint at high speed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardaí from the Buncrana Roads Policing Unit and  Buncrana Garda Station were operating an Operation Thor checkpoint on a rural border road when they signalled for a vehicle to stop.

The driver failed to stop and drove the car through the checkpoint at speed.

Gardaí were forced to deploy their stinger device, and the driver brought the vehicle to an abrupt halt before their tyres were stung.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for cocaine at the scene.

A passenger in the car was found to be in possession of a small amount of suspected cocaine.

No one was injured during the incident.

Gardaí said court proceedings will follow for both driver and passenger.

"Never take unnecessary risks on the roads. Never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol," a spokesperson said.
