Athy workshop will tackle creative blocks

Athy Community Arts Centre is set to host a creative recovery workshop
IF you have any level of creative anxiety, procrastination, creative blocks, imposter syndrome or you’re just looking to approach your work in new and creative ways, an upcoming workshop in Athy might be for you.
The town’s Community Arts Centre on Woodstock Street will host a creative recovery workshop with Embodiment Coach David Delaney on Saturday 7 September.
Participants will learn how to identify their creative blocks, identify and eliminate negative self talk, craft their creative mission statement, and define boundaries with their creative self.
“We are all creative and we are all in some form of recovery – e.g. some of us have creative blocks, imposter syndrome, feelings of 'not good enough' – the workshop looks at these blocks and hindrances, helps the participant to look at, understand and accept that they exist (the blocks, that is) and we work together to find ways of moving the creative process forward,” David explained. “We look at the role of the body as well as the brain in the creative process and sometimes the wisdom can be unlocked using the tools explored as part of the workshop. I've run the workshop before a few times as well as the 1-1 work I do.”
David certified as an Embodiment Coach in 2021 and added Trauma Coaching to this in 2022.
“Fundamentally, Embodiment is who we are in our bodies and while traditional coaching is 'brain based', embodiment methods aim to restore and use the body brain connection in the work,” he said. “Quite often we neglect the somatic aspect of our lives and take our bodies for granted – it's often in tapping into our somatic wisdom that can be very revealing. I am also a QQI certified facilitator in community addiction and also a QQI certified trainer.”
He noted that the 'recovery' in creative recovery is a general term and not directly related to the field of addiction recovery in this case.
“The three-hour workshops are an invitation to participants to start tapping into the body's wisdom, particularly around the area of creativity,” David said. “We use music and gentle movement to explore topics like creative blocks. Each participant will receive a comprehensive workbook with exercises and reflections to continue after the workshop and there will be opportunity to reflect and explore individual creative practices also.”
The workshop will take place on 7 September from 10am-1pm at Athy Community Arts Centre, at a cost of €50 (or pay what you can). Places are filling and there are some early bird tickets still available.
