An estimated 1,000 people took place in the Athy Darkness into Light charity walk over the weekend.

The walk began and ended at Athy College, traversing a five kilometre route out the new bypass.
“I’d say it was close to 1,000, but you’d find that nationwide, these are massive events,” said Patricia Berry from the organising committee.
“The committee is celebrating their 10th anniversary of Darkness into Light, and we’re the same committee for the last 10 years,” she said proudly.
“To each and every one of you who rose before the sun and joined us [on Saturday morning] — thank you.
“To the Gardaí, Civil Defence, Order of Malta, Fire Services ,O.N.E . Athy Town Promoters and Tidy Towns — your presence and support helped light the way.
“Whether you volunteered, stewarded, ran, walked, or simply stood in solidarity, you helped transform the darkness into a powerful symbol of hope, compassion, and unity.
“A special thank you to our incredible ambassador Jack L, to Carrie Haskins, and to Village Voices for providing such moving and memorable entertainment at Athy College before the walk began.
“From the stillness of the early hours to the quiet moments of reflection, every step taken was for someone — for those who are struggling, for those we remember, and for the brighter days ahead.
“The sense of togetherness, kindness, and shared purpose made this morning truly unforgettable — and we’re still feeling the magic."

“Thank you for walking with us,” said Patricia, who hasn’t yet stopped. And as for next year? “Absolutely no problem, full steam ahead for 2026, and the preparations have begun already!” she said.
