And they're off!

January can be a very tough month for a lot of people with the dark days lingering on. Getting out and getting involved with your community is one of the best ways to curb this seasonal phenomenon, and that’s what the Rundermot annual run aims to do.

The community of Castledermot and neighbouring Athy came together for the annual Rundermot run for mental health on 19 January, raising awareness for mental health and funds for local charites Abbeyview mental health facility in Castledermot, St Vincent De Paul and the Irish Wheelchair Association in Athy.

Event organiser, Siobhan Phelan said: “Our run is not about winning – it’s about getting people to understand the importance of looking after your mental health.” The event started with a minute’s applause in memory of young Gavin Anthony who sadly passed a few days before the event. May he rest in peace.

As the runners stood at their marks getting ready to run, Gavin’s favourite band ACDC played in honour of him. And with that the runners were off.

All were presented with hampers and prizes, kindly spondored by Bodylite. A special hamper was given to Lily Anne Keatley as the first child to make it past the finish line.

The fun continued after the run with a great atmosphere as everyone chatted and had a bite to eat from the great spread provided.

Rundermot has been going since 2018, and started in memory of Anthony Keogh. The run prioritises fundraising for the local community through Abbeyview facility each year.

Siobhan said: “With the money raised to date, Abbeyview now have a garden on the premises for users to walk in or do a bit of gardening or just sit and reflect, and have gone on day trips and outings, all which wouldn’t be possible without the fund raised.” “It makes a huge difference to them and brings a bit of joy to their lives.

”After the run, a brilliant total of €3,196 was raised in aid of the chosen charities. If you couldn’t make it to the run, there’s still time to donate on the GoFundMe page, available from the Rundermot facebook page.

“We would urge people if they are suffering in any way, talk, make contact with someone and get help. Life is to be enjoyed – don’t suffer alone in silence.”
