SOME 200 people turned out for the recent Picnic on the Green in Old Kilcullen, organised by the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association. Fortunately for all, the weather stayed balmy and even when threatening clouds rolled in, the rain stayed away.

In addition to refreshments through the afternoon and fun events for both adults and children, attractions included vintage music, vintage cars and vintage chat!

The event has become a fixture on the historic green area below Old Kilcullen hill.

The area was the location of the original Old Kilcullen village that developed around the ancient monastic site on the hill with its round tower.

By the time of the Battle of Old Kilcullen in 1798, that village had been largely supplanted by the modern Kilcullen on the Liffey as the locality's main residential and commercial centre.

The Picnic on the Green was inaugurated in 2019 and this year's attendance was the largest so far, according to Christy Howard of the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association.
