Kildare community celebrates reopening of tennis court

Enjoying the newly refurbished tennis court in Narraghmore.

THAT idiosyncratic sound of summer is set to ring out again over Narraghmore with the re-opening of the village tennis court as a ‘multi-purpose’ arena.

The original tennis court is believed to have been built on the Kelly family property back in the 70s before falling into disuse.

Through the generosity of the Kelly family offering a long-term lease on the court to the Narraghmore Community Development Group, and a successful application for a sport capital grant of just short of €45,000 in 2023, the village now has this additional amenity right in the centre of town.

“We have a brand new court with a coloured surface and new fencing,” said Sinead Pullen, one of the organising committee.

“We’ve also added the hoops for basketball as well, and everybody’s delighted with it.

“People are coming out of the woodwork in the village who we never knew played!"

“Oh, we’ll definitely be starting summer leagues,” she added, with a little glint of competitiveness.

The new club has engaged the assistance of qualified tennis instructor Yoomi Miller who will be running two classes on Friday mornings, an adult beginners group from 10-11am, and cardio tennis workout from 11am to noon.

Family subscriptions are a very attractive €40 per annum, whilst individual subs are €25pa.
