ONCE again, the St Brigid Camino walk took place in Monasterevin to honour St Brigid, inviting parishioners to walk the steps of the Kildare saint to celebrate her feast day.

The annual event took place as part of the Spirit of Kildare – Brigid Festival 2026.
A large crowd of local parishioners gathered on Monday, February 2, 2026 to mark St Brigid’s feast day with a commemorative pilgrimage.

The Monasterevin Parish Camino Walk began at St Brigid’s Shrine in Mountrice on the Monasterevin–Rathangan Road, with participants setting off at 11am for the approximately 6km journey.
A bus service operated from Monasterevin Parish Church to the starting point in Mountrice, and walkers were issued their very own St Brigid Camino passport.

The walk was led by Bishop Denis Nulty, Bishop of the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, and organised by Parish Priest, Fr Liam Merrigan.

St Brigid is reputed to have been born in the townland of Umeras, just outside Monasterevin, Co Kildare. Attendees walked in the footsteps of Brigid by travelling via Umeras along the New Canal Blueway, retracing part of the landscape associated with her early life.

The walk finished at St Peter and Paul’s Church on Drogheda Street in Monasterevin for a special ‘Service of Light’ which was held at the church at 12.30pm and attended by members of the community.

Refreshments were served afterwards, giving attendees an opportunity to relax a bit and was a fantastic conclusion to a wonderful community event.
