THE COMMUNITY of Kildare came together once again in support of the Irish Cancer Society in the run up to this year’s Relay for Life, uniting people to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost, and stand in solidarity with those currently facing cancer.

This year, a particularly inspiring contribution has come from the Newbridge College community, where students and staff have come together in a remarkable show of compassion, leadership and action in support of Relay for Life Kildare.

Following a powerful talk by Peter White, Chairman of the Relay for Life Kildare committee, students were deeply moved by the message of Relay for Life and the impact of cancer on families and communities. The response was extraordinary, with 620 students and 7 teachers volunteering to join the school’s Relay for Life team. Many students have personal connections to cancer, with family members affected, making the initiative especially meaningful within the school.

Since getting involved, Newbridge College students and staff have organised a wide range of fundraising and awareness activities throughout the school year. These include civvies days, bake sales, and a school-based Relay for Life walk/run event, all aimed at raising vital funds and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society and the services it provides.

The school created a symbolic ‘Tree of Hope’ at Christmas to remember loved ones lost to cancer and support those currently undergoing treatment. In addition, students hosted a Cancer Survivors Coffee Morning last Friday, welcoming members of the local community to share their personal stories and experiences. Students are also designing a dedicated Relay for Life flag to represent their shared commitment to the cause.

The initiative has become a powerful movement within the school, with students describing Relay for Life as something that goes beyond fundraising.

Speaking on the impact of the students’ involvement, Peter Whyte, Chairman of Relay for Life Kildare, said: “The response from Newbridge College has been truly exceptional. To see over 600 students and their teachers step forward with such passion and empathy is incredibly moving. It shows the power of young people when they come together for a cause that touches so many lives. Their commitment gives real hope for the future of Relay for Life in Kildare.”

Deputy Principal of Newbridge College, Deirdre O’Callaghan, also praised the students’ dedication: “We are immensely proud of our students for the compassion, maturity and leadership they have shown through their involvement in Relay for Life. For many of them, this cause is deeply personal, and they have channelled that into something truly positive for their community. The sense of unity, kindness and purpose across the school has been extraordinary.”

Organisers are encouraging individuals, families, schools, businesses, and community groups from across Kildare to come along on the day of the Relay for Life Kildare 24-hour event, which will take place at The Curragh Racecourse from 6–7 June 2026, beginning at 1pm. The event will bring together thousands of participants in a powerful celebration of hope, remembrance, and unity.
