Youth group shines at Kildare colour run
Kate Langton and Dawn Wall cross the colourful finish line.
IN a scene reminiscent of the Hindi Holi Festival, the village of Narraghmore held its first annual Colour Run on Good Friday (3 April) – and it was organised by two 17 year olds.

The two members of the Narraghmore Foróige Club Hannah Moore and Niamh Allen are doing their ‘Leadership for Life’ course that takes an impressive three years and results in a certificate awarded by NUI Galway.

“Hannah is in Ard Scoil in Athy and Niamh is in St Kevin’s, Dunlavin, both of them are in 5th year," said Esther Magera, Foróige’s Club Leader in the village.
“They organised the Colour Run and an Easter Egg Hunt around the village,” she said.
“Originally the run was supposed to be 5k, but they changed it to a 4k run because the weather was so bad, however it went so well we will probably do a Colour Run annually now.

“The Easter Egg Hunt was like a scavenger hunt round the village, and it took place after the run.
“There were about 70 participants in the run and more than 100 in the Easter Egg Hunt which, given the weather wasn’t a bad turn out!”
The asked where did the idea come from.

Esther told us that “another Foróige club in the county tried one a few years ago, and so it gave the girls the idea to do this.

“Part of the process in was learning how to apply for grants from the Credit Union and Kildare County Council, and not sit around waiting for things to happen, but it looks like it will all come good.
“It’s a great learning experience. Passing on the mantle to the next generation and knowing they can do it – it’s a great experience for them.
“They looked up where to get the Colour Run powder, and we ordered two boxes, but we only needed one!
“We had six Foróige leaders along the route squirting the powder.
“We were hoping to do the 5k on a loop they call The Bucket, but we went on the new road instead.
“We’ll do the Bucket next time, and we’ll order the sunshine for next year!"
