A MAN who was given a two-month suspended sentence was told that he needs to address his addiction to alcohol.
The advice was given by Judge Andrew Cody when Martins Lavrinovics (33), Roseberry Terrace, Newbridge was summoned before Portlaoise District Court recently for assault and engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour on 5 March at James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise.
The case had already been before the court and was adjourned for a probation report to be compiled on the defendant.
When the case resumed last week, Judge Cody asked Mr Lavrinovics: “Have you seen the probation report,” to which the defendant replied: “Yeah.”
“Have you anything to say about it?” asked the judge.
Mr Lavrinovics replied: “Yeah.”
“Have you anymore to say than yeah?” asked Judge Cody, who went on to read from the report. “This says you will continue drinking every day. You need to address your addiction for your alcohol problem.”
Judge Cody said the 33-year-old defendant was seen in the store putting a bottle of whiskey to his head (drinking). Whan approached by a security officer, he spat at him.
For the assault, Judge Cody imposed a two-month sentence, which he suspended for two years and took the public order offence into consideration.
