A motorist who was stopped by gardaí at a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing roadside checkpoint was found to be over the permissible drink driving limit.

30-year-old Elton Gwande from Glann na Riogh Drive, Naas, pleaded guilty to drink driving on 4 August in Ballybrittas village, Co Laois when he came before Portlaoise District Court last week.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told Judge Andrew Cody that the defendant’s breath sample returned a reading of 44 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Mr Gwande, who works as a general operative, had no previous convictions and had never come to garda attention before.

Judge Cody convicted the defendant, fined him €100 and disqualified him from driving for one year.
