WHEN gardaí stopped a car that they had detected speeding, they found six children in it, three of whom were not restrained.

Garda Stephen O’Hanlon told Judge Andrew Cody at Portlaoise District Court that while on duty at Clonrooske View, Maryborough, Portlaoise on 15 June at about 6pm, he observed a car travelling at a speed of 96kph in a 60kph zone, overtaking and crossing a continuous white line with just one front headlight working.

When he went to speak to the driver, he observed six children in the car, and only three were restrained.

He said that he issued the defendant, who had 12 previous convictions, with fixed-charged penalty notices, which went unpaid.

The defendant, Therese Louise Connors (29) from Derryoughter East, Kildangan, Monasterevin, Co Kildare, was not present in court when her case was called.

Judge Cody convicted Ms Connors of speeding, driving over a continuous white line, driving with just one headlight and of three counts of failing to restrain children in a vehicle, fined her €250 for each offence, and disqualified her from driving for three years.
