Kildare Ladies’ football side travel to the Kingdom this weekend

Kildare's Neasa Dooley in action against Dublin last weekend.

Kildare Senior Ladies’ football side will travel to Killarney this weekend to face Kerry in Division 1 of the Lidl National Ladies’ football league this Sunday.

Pat Sullivan’s side come into this fixture following a phenomenal win over Dublin last weekend. The Lilywhites were well worthy of their three-point victory on the day.

However, there is no doubt about it, this weekend’s clash against last year’s All-Ireland champions, will be Kildare’s toughest test to date.

The Kingdom have only played one game in the league so far this year. They defeated Waterford by three points in their first league game last weekend.

Speaking after Kildare’s win over Dublin, Sullivan said, “I think outside our circle we were underdogs but not within our group. We were very disappointed with last week. Credit to Waterford. Last Tuesday we had a great session and after Tuesday night I was confident we would see a different Kildare team. We ran into a 1-2 or 1-3 lead and that was huge. We went on the front foot. They came back in the second half, but we got a good foothold. We got a super score from Roisin to nail it.

“We’re fit, we’ve super S & C guys with us. Fitness wasn’t an issue. We just took a player back to the midfield area. Our forwards worked very hard. These decisions happen they are part and parcel. Two points on the board means a lot. Look we looked at it as a block of three games. We looked at the Kerry game, Waterford and today. If you can’t compete with these teams in the league, how can you compete with them in the league.” Sullivan’s charges also faced Waterford in their first league game nearly two weeks ago, however Kildare were defeated on the day in a bitterly disappointing result.

Kildare were promoted to Division 1 of the league for the 2025 season, after they were promoted alongside Tyrone in 2024, from Division 2. Both sides were many people’s favourites to go down this year, however Kildare showed last weekend that they will be a test for anyone in Division 1. Tyrone however have struggled to date in 2025 and are yet to register a win in the league so far.

Sullivan has insisted throughout the league this his side are taking the league in three game blocks, with this game being the final game of the first block.

As this is Kerry’s first home game since their All-Ireland victory over Galway last year, a large crowd is expected at the game. To the delight of many, the game is also being held at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney, the spiritual home of Kerry football.

Kildare will face Kerry this Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium, in Killarney at 1pm.
