Kildare man gets 12 months for heroin possession

A MAN convicted of possession of more than €3,000 worth of heroin and of money laundering was jailed for 12 months this week, but had it backdated after the judge said he’s been held on remand since the search.
Christy Lammon (57) of Coney Meadows, Coneyboro, Athy was appearing at Athy District from remand for sentencing.
Sergeant Dave Hanrahan explained how colleagues with a search warrant went to Mr Lammon’s address on the morning of 11 July, where they discovered €3,230 worth of heroin and €900 in cash.
“So, drug dealing and money laundering?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan. “Previous?”
“Four for Section 15 (possession with intent to supply) and 10 for Section 3 (simple possession),” said the sergeant. “His last conviction was in 2017, his first in 2011, and he is in custody on this matter,” he added.
“Judge, he entered an early plea and hasn’t been in trouble in seven years,” said defending solicitor Jackie McManus.
“And we’re getting soundbites from politicians to legalise stuff like this,” the judge shook his head.
“Unfortunately, he was holding the drugs and has been in custody for four months since 11 July,” said Ms McManus.
“He’s 57 years old and I don’t think you’ll see Christy Lammon in court again."
“You’re a great believer in people,” smiled the judge. “I am not! How are you going to stay heroin-free when you get out? You managed to do it in prison, what’s your plan when released?”
“Get a job, and stay off drugs,” offered Ms McManus.
“That’s a good plan,” said the judge archly, before sentencing Mr Lammon to 12 months in prison for the Section 15 charge, taking into consideration the simple possession and the money laundering. He backdated the sentence to 11 July and ordered “forfeiture and destruction” of the seized items.
